Nike began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, founded by Phil Knight and his coach, Bill Bowerman. Initially, the company operated as a reseller for the Japanese Onitsuka Tiger, now known as ASICS. The name Nike was coined by Jeff Johnson, inspired by the Greek statue "The Winged Victory of Samothrace". Their first shoe, the "Nike Waffle Trainer", was released in 1974, and the successful "Nike Swoosh" collection soon followed.
