Nike began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, founded by Phil Knight and his coach, Bill Bowerman. Initially, the company operated as a reseller for the Japanese Onitsuka Tiger, now known as ASICS. The name Nike was coined by Jeff Johnson, inspired by the Greek statue "The Winged Victory of Samothrace".
