Nike started in 1964 under the name Blue Ribbon Sports, founded by Phil Knight and his coach, Bill Bowerman. Initially, the company acted as a reseller for Japanese Onitsuka Tiger, now known as ASICS. The name Nike came from Jeff Johnson, inspired by the Greek statue "The Victory of Samothrace". Their first shoe, the "Nike Waffle Trainer", was released in 1974 and was soon followed by the successful "Nike Swoosh" collection.
